Medicine Hat Tigers forward Cole Sillinger celebrates after scoring a goal during a Western Hockey League game against the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019 at the Canalta Centre.

He took over the rookie scoring lead in the WHL and on Tuesday, Medicine Hat Tigers forward Cole Sillinger got noticed nationwide.

The 16-year-old from Regina was named to the CHL’s team of the week, joining Guelph Storm’s Pavel Gogolev, Spokane Chiefs’ Adam Beckman, Kelowna Rockets’ Kaedan Korczak, Saint John Sea Dogs’ William Villeneuve and Kitchener Rangers’ Jacob Ingham.

Sillinger’s six-point night – originally five but bumped thanks to several post-game scoring changes – in last Wednesday’s 8-4 win in Prince Albert was the obvious highlight, following a three-assist effort in Saskatoon the night before. He had 10 points in the week overall between four games.

Now with 12 goals and 23 helpers in 28 games, Sillinger and the Tigers are off until Dec. 27. He’s got a five-point cushion on Winnipeg’s Michal Teply atop the rookie scoring chart.

Gogolev had eight goals and an assist to earn his place on the weekly team. Beckman’s six goals and three assists rounded out the forward group. Korczak and Villeneuve each had five points as defencemen, while goaltender Ingham stopped 63 of 64 shots against in a pair of wins.
