Medicine Hat’s two teams at 3A girls volleyball provincials didn’t finish in the medals, but they did each close their seasons with pride.
Crescent Heights’ Vikings wound up fifth in the Alberta Schools Athletic Association finals in St. Paul, taking the eventual gold medal winners from Springbank to a third set in a Saturday afternoon quarter-final. The 2-1 (24-26, 25-18, 15-10) loss was part of an incredible playoff round in which every single match – from the quarters to the finals – needed three sets. Springbank beat Edmonton Christian in the championship match.
Monsignor McCoy’s Colts also took Springbank to three sets in their round robin meeting Friday, but that loss left them out of the playoff picture. They finished 2-3 with a straight-sets win over Holy Rosary on Saturday morning.
The Vikings were also 2-3 in the round robin, but squeaked in to the top three in their six-team pool thanks to a tiebreaker win over the host St. Paul squad.
Crescent Heights coach Scott Galloway noted in an email to the News that the narrow loss to Springbank proved his South Zone-winning team was “right there as a top 3A team in the province.”
