Rattlers roundup: Women’s volleyball team falls to 4-5 with loss to Queens

The Medicine Hat Rattlers women’s volleyball team fell to 4-5 on the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference season following a four-set loss to the Red Deer Queens (25-15, 29-27, 17-25, 25-19) on Friday night at the Snake Pit.

Amber Stigter led the Rattlers with 13 kills and 15 digs while Janessa Oelke added 30 assists, but it wasn’t enough to keep Medicine Hat’s four-game winning streak alive.

Alexandra Greenshields had 13 kills for Red Deer, while Kaylee Domoney dug out 26 and Emma Letkeman set up 40 to push the Queens to 5-2 on the season.

Men’s volleyball

The Red Deer Kings came all the way back to steal a five-set victory from the Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s volleyball team (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-10) on Friday night at the Snake Pit.

KeAndre Evans powered the Rattlers with 16 kills in the loss, while Nikola Sreckovic added 48 assists and Ty Moline had 15 digs.

Carter Hills led the Kings offence with 27 kills, while Zak Hallworth dug out 12 and Thomas Wass set up 54.

The loss leaves Medicine Hat at 1-8 with their eighth straight loss. Red Deer improved to 6-1.

Red Deer and Medicine Hat return to the Snake Pit for a set of rematches Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Women’s basketball

The Medicine Hat Rattlers women’s basketball team had a two-game winning streak halted in a lopsided 72-36 loss to the St. Mary’s Lightning on the road Friday.

Morgan Muir led Medicine Hat with 15 points and finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds in the loss.

The Rattlers were held to just five points in the second quarter and two in the third.

Hannah Helton led the Lightning with 18 points, while Emily Wagner added 17 and Juhee Anderson had 16.

Medicine Hat slipped to 3-4 with the loss, while St. Mary’s improved to 4-3.

Men’s basketball

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s basketball team met a similar fate on Friday evening at St. Mary’s, dropping a 98-64 contest to the Lightning.

Tyler Jones led the Rattlers with 14 points from the bench, while Zavier Croft added 13, Arthur Rosa had 12 and Kieron Burgess recorded nine boards.

Wil Konybai led the Lightning to victory with 21 points while Johnpaul Okodua added 15 points with nine rebounds.

The loss leaves Medicine Hat at 1-6, while St. Mary’s improved to 3-4.

The Rattlers basketball teams return to the Snake Pit on Nov. 29 to host Red Deer.
