Pair of Hat football players named all-stars

Two Medicine Hat football players were singled out as all-stars, albeit four months after the competition they were judged to have stood out in.

Offensive lineman Xavier Bueckert and defensive back Abdul Kiawen were named to the 40-man under-16 West All-Star Team Thursday, following their participation in the Under-16 Western Challenge in Kamloops way back in July.

Bueckert played for the McCoy Colts this past high school season, while Kiawen was with the Parkside Pythons team that got to the provincial semifinals.

At the Western Challenge, Alberta lost to British Columbia 26-21 in the semifinals but beat Manitoba 69-0 for bronze. Saskatchewan beat B.C. 21-7 for gold.
