Muir has big night in lopsided win

By Medicine Hat News on November 9, 2019.

Medicine Hat College’s women’s basketball team had everything working Friday night.

On home court the Rattlers got out to a big lead and cruised to a 70-41 win over the SAIT Trojans, getting back to the .500 mark for the season.

Fifth-year guard Morgan Muir had her highest-scoring game in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference with 22 points, adding six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Tatiana Dutka added a double-double, 10 points and 10 boards and the team improved to 3-3 in the regular season.

SAIT was led by Rachel Osczevski’s 17 points and nine rebounds, but didn’t score a point in the first five minutes, down 20-5 by the end of the first quarter. The Trojans fell to 1-4.

Medicine Hat heads to Lethbridge Saturday.

Men’s basketball

Facing the three-time defending league champions, the Rattlers men’s basketball team didn’t put up much of a fight.

SAIT won 86-66, but led 42-18 after the first quarter alone and gave many of its bench players significant minutes the rest of the way.

Calvin Chambers had 18 of his game-high 28 points in the first quarter, while Gemie Muya had 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Trojans improved to 4-0.

Kieron Burgess’s 18 points and 15 rebounds were the high point for Medicine Hat, now 1-4 and off to Lethbridge Saturday.

Women’s volleyball

At Lethbridge, the women’s volleyball team won its third match in a row, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-18) over the Kodiaks.

Brooke Christie had a big game for the Rattlers, putting in 11 kills and 10 digs. Dryden Gris added eight kills and three blocks as the team improved to 3-4.

Lethbridge’s Mack Lewicki had 10 kills and 10 digs to lead her team, which fell to 2-3.

The teams rematch Saturday, 6 p.m. at the Snake Pit.

Men’s volleyball

In their first game since coach Mark Porter quit this week, the Rattlers men’s volleyball team suffered its sixth straight loss, 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21) in Lethbridge.

The Kodiaks registered 46 digs, nearly twice as many as Medicine Hat’s meagre count of 25. Dexter Mackie had 10 kills and six blocks for the visitors while Aleksa Zivic had 12 kills, but the host side prevailed thanks in part to Carter Hansen’s 15-kill, eight-dig effort.

Now 1-6, the Rattlers host the Kodiaks Saturday at 8 p.m.
