The great thing about school sports is that you can never predict them.

What happened Wednesday night at Crescent Heights is a great example.

St. Mary’s girls B division volleyball team was seeded sixth entering junior high city playoffs, barely winning more sets than they’d lost all season. But they had a certain je ne sais quoi going for them and made it all the way to the final against unbeaten Crescent Heights.

First, the Colts took a set off the Vikings. And that would have been impressive enough. But down 14-10 in the deciding third set, they pulled off an incredible six straight points for the 16-14 win.

Coach Michelle Miller is said to have coached the St. Mary’s team for a number of years but this was her first city title according to school athletic director Curt Moll. Attempts to reach Miller by phone Thursday night were unsuccessful.

C division

In the C division playoffs recently at St. Mary’s, the Dr. Roy Wilson Royals upheld their No. 1 seed with a 2-0 win over Medicine Hat Christian’s Warriors.

The Warriors were the surprise of the night, the low seed but upsetting both St. Mary’s and Crescent Heights to reach the final.

Parkside beat Crescent Heights for third place.
