Rattlers roundup: Soccer teams miss out on playoffs

By Medicine Hat News on October 21, 2019.

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s soccer team was unable to extend its season on Sunday afternoon at Red Deer College.

With their playoff fate hanging in the balance for a win-or-go-home regular season finale against the Kings, the Rattlers were held off the scoresheet in a 2-0 loss and ousted from playoff contention as a result.

The Rattlers and Kings battled to a scoreless draw in their only other meeting this season. Had the Rattlers escaped with a victory Sunday, they would have tied Red Deer with a 6-4-2 record and taken the South’s third seed in the upcoming Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference championship via tiebreaker. With the loss however, the Rattlers fell to fifth with a 5-5-2 record while the Kings locked up third at 7-3-2.

Turner Johnson and Nathan Swartz both scored in the second half to lead Red Deer to the victory.

Rattlers keeper Joao Batista stopped two shots in the loss. Red Deer’s Jacob Hamilton earned the clean sheet with three saves.

The Rattlers picked up a 3-0 must-win victory over the Augustana Vikings on Saturday.

Stephen Copeland, Raouf Mohamed and Mason Antler scored for Medicine Hat in the victory, while Batista stopped both shots he faced to lock up the win.

Augustana’s Alex Dobson stopped one shot in the loss.

Women also miss out

Medicine Hat College’s women’s soccer squad met the same fate over the weekend, though their hopes were dashed a day earlier following a 5-1 loss to Augustana.

The Olds Broncos secured their hold on third place in the ACAC South with a 4-0 win over Ambrose Saturday. While they lost to SAIT Sunday, Medicine Hat was forced to rely on back-to-back Bronco losses in order to clinch a playoff berth – making their result against the Vikings a moot point.

Demi Vermeet scored twice for Augustana, while Kara Strange, Nicole Ubels and Jessica LaLonde added individual tallies.

Taylor Stroh scored Medicine Hat’s lone goal in the loss.

The Rattlers regrouped and closed out their season on a high with a dominant 6-0 victory over the Queens on Sunday in Red Deer.

Shelby Bach, Maisa Rebello, Barbara Nascimento, Aleena Matthews, Grace Porter and Atlanta Evis all scored for Medicine Hat in the season-ending win.

Amanda Oevering stopped five shots to lock up the clean sheet. Red Deer’s Alethea Riemer settled for the loss on three saves.

Men’s hoops squad wins

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s basketball team opened the ACAC season with a 76-68 victory over the St. Mary’s Lightning on Saturday in Calgary.

After trailing 18-13 through the first quarter, the Rattlers rebounded to take a 62-45 lead into the fourth. St. Mary’s mounted a spirited comeback effort, outscoring Medicine Hat 23-14 in the final quarter, but the Rattlers held on for the victory.

Kieron Burgess led the Rattlers with 24 points and 17 rebounds for a double-double in his season debut. Burgess also picked up four assists and four steals.

Arthur Rosa followed up his efforts with 21 points and 12 boards, while Zavier Croft added 13 points with five rebounds from the bench.

Jordan Britton led the Lightning with 24 points, while Johnpaul Okodua added nine rebounds from the bench.

Women fall to Lightning

The Medicine Hat Rattlers women’s basketball team came out on the wrong end of a 72-45 battle with the St. Mary’s Lightning to open their ACAC season on the road Saturday.

Paige Cooper and Katelyn Rozdeba both posted a team-high 10 points in the loss, while Rozdeba added nine rebounds and Morgan Muir had seven steals.

St. Mary’s got at least 10 points out of all five of their starters, led by 18 from Juhnee Anderson.

Chayle Clark finished with 10 points and 10 boards for the Lightning.

The Rattlers men’s and women’s basketball teams return to the Snake Pit for their home opener Friday night against the Lethbridge Kodiaks.

Men’s volleyball team drops four-set match

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s volleyball team fell to 1-1 on the ACAC season with a four-set loss to the Ambrose Lions (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20) on the road Saturday.

Jovan Stepanovic led Medicine Hat with 14 kills and added two aces with seven digs in the loss.

Mark Fountain collected 10 kills and eight digs for Ambrose in the victory.

The loss follows up Medicine Hat’s three-set sweep over Ambrose Friday.

Women fall in five

Medicine Hat College’s women’s volleyball team slipped to 0-2 on the ACAC season with a spirited five-set loss to the Lions on Saturday at Ambrose College.

Amber Stigter led the Rattlers with 15 kills in the loss, while Shaya Suchy had 19 digs and Janessa Oelke set up 34.

Willow Lewington led the Lions with a 14-kill performance and Journey Flewell dug out 32 on defence.

The setback marks Medicine Hat’s second straight five-set loss to the Lions.

Medicine Hat’s men’s and women’s volleyball teams return to the court Friday in Caronport against the Briercrest Clippers.
