Ringette season has barely begun and already Medicine Hat teams are nibbling on gold medals.

Two teams came home from the Turkey Ring tournament in St. Albert this past weekend with championship wins.

For the under-19 Mighty Ducks, it took a great effort against the host St. Albert Strike to claim a 9-7 gold medal win. Ashlyn Seale and Allyson Mason each scored a pair while Cassidy Stock, Bree Becker, Sheridyn Herman and Jade Forsyth rounded out the scoring. Medicine Hat led 5-2 at halftime and held off a surge in the final minutes.

Their road to glory wasn’t an easy one. After an 11-4 win over Sherwood Park, the Ducks fell 7-6 to Lethbridge in their second game and needed a 7-0 win over St. Albert Strike to reach the finale. Sydney Carlson got the rare shutout in net for the crucial win.

Under-16 A

A slow start led to a chance for redemption for the under-16 Riptide.

In the under-16 A division, Riptide lost its first game 9-5 to Calgary’s Bow View Havoc. But they rebounded with wins over Sherwood Park Force (9-4) and St. Albert Royals (5-3) to earn a rematch with the Havoc.

Despite outshooting their opposition, the Riptide found themselves tied 4-4 in Sunday’s gold medal match with four minutes remaining. Goals from Marin Sinclair and Preslee Starner resulted in a 6-4 win and gold medals around their necks.

Other scorers in the final were Delaney Mastel, Raynah Gibney, Marley Rose and Kylie Kallenberger. Jena Harty made 18 saves in net as Medicine Hat outshot Bow View 33-22.

Under-16 B

Matrix got its first three games of the season in at the Turkey Ring, going 1-2.

In the under-16 B division, Medicine Hat lost 6-3 to Calgary Nitro, 3-2 to Spruce Grove but finished with a 7-3 win over Edmonton to end on a high note.

Charlie Christie and Leah Jetter each had two goals in the win. Callie Johnson, Hailey Sanders and Serina Grona had the others. Rheagyn Henrichs got the win in net.
