Minor hockey: Midget AA Hounds tie both of their weekend games

By Medicine Hat News on October 16, 2019.

It seems the Jasper Home Hounds can’t win a game lately.

Fortunately, they can’t lose, either.

Medicine Hat’s midget AA team tied both of its games this past weekend, 3-3 against Wheatland’s Chiefs Friday and 1-1 against the Calgary Royals Blue on Saturday.

In Strathmore Friday night, Ty Moore, Tanner Gold and Caleb Irvine all scored and it seemed Irvine’s power play marker in the third would hold up as the winner until Wheatland’s Nolan Bailey tied it with 1:36 to go.

Brendan Olson made 21 saves in the Hat net.

Coming home late that night and hosting an afternoon game at the Kinplex Saturday wasn’t a great situation for the Hounds, but Moore’s third-period goal salvaged the 1-1 draw against the Calgary side. Nate Hoffman made 17 saves for the single point.

The Hounds are in High River to face Foothills Friday.

Midget 15’s

The South East Athletic Club’s midget 15-year-old team won its third game in a row Saturday but didn’t finish the weekend unscathed.

At home to the Calgary Stampeders, the Tigers won 5-1. Power play goals from Austin Derzaph and Brady Mahar plus even-strength goals from Aiden Ma, Josh Drefs and Matthew MacPherson rounded out the offence. Kaiden Morin made 23 stops in net as his team outshot the Stamps 44-24.

On Sunday in Cochrane, the AC Avalanche handed the Tigers a 4-2 loss. Luke Renschler and Kieran Christianson had the goals for SEAC, which never led despite outshooting the Avs 35-29. Landon Porteous took the loss in goal.

SEAC only plays once this weekend, and it’s on the road.

Bantam AAA

SEAC’s bantam AAA Tigers only had one game this past weekend, and they made the most of it.

On Friday at Hockey Hounds Recreation Centre, the Tigers edged the Lethbridge Golden Hawks 4-3.

Third-period goals from Josh Van Mulligen and Noah Derouin were the difference, the former’s coming on a power play and Derouin’s 44 seconds later holding up as the winner after Lethbridge scored in the final minute of play.

Derouin finished with two goals, Van Mulligen with a goal and two assists while Dawson Stewart had the other tally for SEAC. Beck Boiteau made 29 saves in the win.

The team is on the road to the capital region this weekend.

Bantam AA

In bantam AA play, Medicine Hat lost 4-2 in Okotoks Saturday before rebounding with a 4-4 tie against Foothills Sunday on home ice.

Jacob Hazzard had both goals Saturday, and Tavynn Schlaht had two assists. Kaige Schafer made 34 saves in the loss.

The Hounds led 3-0 at the Family Leisure Centre Sunday but gave up the next four goals, needing Jake Christianson’s second goal of the day to earn a tie. Zach Herman had the other two goals and Tyler Wakelam made 26 saves for Medicine Hat.

Peewee AA

Medicine Hat’s two peewee AA teams had a good finish to their weekends.

Black beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red 5-3 Friday night, then returned home to earn a 9-5 win over Foothills Saturday.

Orange was shut out 6-0 Saturday by the Golden Suns, then won 8-3 on the road against Foothills Sunday.

Weekend highlights included Josiah Jackson’s five-point performance including three goals for Orange Sunday, and hat tricks from both Ryan Miller and Ryler Straarup Saturday for Black.
