It’s already been a busy first week of competition for local high school volleyball teams, and the energy was at a high level in Tuesday’s league opener at Crescent Heights High School.
The host Vikings trailed early but rallied to beat Hat High in the varsity girls matchup 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-12, 25-21).
That followed a Saturday contest between the clubs at a tournament in Calgary, where the result was similar – 25-22, 21-25 and 15-12 for Crescent Heights. The win gave the Vikings bronze medals, but preceded the final which saw two other Hat-area teams square off.
In that final, it was McCoy beating Eagle Butte in three sets. McCoy had beat Hat High in the semifinals and Eagle Butte needed a third set to dispatch Crescent Heights, but all in all it showed there’s going to be a high level of volleyball played in the South East Zone Volleyball League this fall.
In Tuesday’s earlier junior varsity girls game, Hat High’s Kwahommies earned a narrow 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 27-25, 25-11) win over the host Vikings.
