Hat High starts hot: Mohawks open 40th RFC season with 51-6 win over Colts

The Hat High Mohawks opened the 40th Rangeland Football Conference season with a landslide 51-6 victory over the McCoy Colts on Friday night at the Methanex Bowl.

Ashton Larson led the Mohawks to start their fifth consecutive RFC title defence with three rushing touchdowns on 95 yards in the victory.

Rookie quarterback Brodie Fink threw for 170 yards and found Aaron Kruger in the end zone for a pair of touchdown catches.

Mohawks running back Piercen Meier also punched in two touchdowns while rushing for 89 yards, and Kruger finished with 51 receiving yards.

Toras Brooks-Kirsch punched in the lone touchdown for McCoy on a catch-and-run play in the second quarter.

The win moves Hat High to 1-0, while McCoy fell to 0-1.

Vikings win in Brooks

The Crescent Heights Vikings opened their RFC campaign with a hard-fought 20-13 win over the Buffalos on Friday night in Brooks.

Jordan Larochelle helped the Vikings stay in an early 6-6 game with a touchdown catch in the first quarter, then Tony Simmons added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second and third to help secure the victory.

Brooks came back with a score in the fourth to keep the pressure on, but Crescent Heights’ defence managed to hold the line and push the Vikings to 1-0.

Brooks slipped to 0-1 with the loss.
