Local high school football teams are set to start the regular season on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019. Hat High takes on McCoy at the Methanex Bowl while Crescent Heights visits Brooks.

The regular season has arrived for local high school football teams, and how Friday’s games turn out could be an important signpost for all three of them.

Though Hat High is expected to roll over its opposition as five-time defending Rangeland Football Conference champions, and although they were ranked sixth in Tier 2 by Football Alberta, the Mohawks started practising a week later than usual and lost their exhibition opener to Lloydminster’s Holy Rosary.

Hat High’s opponent at the Methanex Bowl? McCoy, which has a 2-0 record already but hasn’t held a candle to its cross-town opposition in recent years. The Colts earned impressive wins over Chinook and W.R. Myers to start the campaign.

The third local cog is Crescent Heights, which opens at Brooks. Like McCoy, the Vikings aren’t in the top 10 of Football Alberta’s rankings, while Brooks came in at No. 7 among Tier 3 schools. Crescent Heights lost to Ross Sheppard at McMahon Stadium Friday.

Kickoff for the Hat High-McCoy game is 7:30 p.m.
