Tigers sign two to WHL basic contracts

By Medicine Hat News on September 4, 2019.

The Medicine Hat Tigers signed two players to WHL contracts Tuesday.

Defenceman Henry Smith and forward Tyler MacKenzie were both drafted by Medicine Hat earlier this year. Smith, from Richmond, B.C., was the team’s third pick overall, going 34th in the second round. MacKenzie, from Red Deer, was Medicine Hat’s eighth selection, 122nd overall in the sixth round.

Both are coming off impressive bantam seasons and aren’t eligible to join the Tigers this season on a full-time basis.

“Henry is a two-way defenceman with good feet,” said Tigers director of player personnel Bobby Fox in a press release. “He has a heavy shot, makes crisp tape to tape passes and he shows good offensive as well as defensive instincts.”

As for MacKenzie, Fox was quoted as saying the 15-year-old “is a speedy forward who is quick to loose pucks and drives to the net with courage. He makes good decisions and has excellent hands in tight.”
