Mickey breaks own Canadian record

It was an amazing performance, just not one that earned Sarah Mickey a medal.

The 21-year-old from Redcliff broke her own Canadian record at the Parapan Am Games in Lima, Peru Tuesday, finishing fourth in the F55 women’s seated discus.

Mickey, on by far the biggest stage of her short career in athletics, threw 21.38 metres on her second of six attempts. She had thrown 21.30 metres in Lethbridge in May but topped out at 19.08 metres in winning a silver medal at nationals last month.

Mexico’s Rosa Maria Guerrero won with a throw of 22.64 metres. Columbia’s Erica Maria Castano was second at 22.42, while Belen Montserrat Sanchez of Mexico was third with 22.25 metres.

Mickey is already pre-qualified to compete at worlds later this year in Dubai and could be on track for the Paralympics next year in Japan.
