Valk, Martin win club championships

By Medicine Hat News on August 13, 2019.

Mike Valk and Becky Martin earned top spots at Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club’s club championships this past weekend thanks to dominant opening rounds.

Valk shot 68’s both days to fend off Victoria Day Classic winner Mitch Kurtz by seven strokes. The lead after the first round was six shots – not impossible to overcome but the Wayland Baptist University (Texas) player was too consistent to let anyone make a run.

Similarly, Martin, the Alberta Amateur champion, opened with a 71 that was nine shots better than Kaitlyn Reniak. Reniak did finish with a marvelous 78 for the low ladies score Sunday, but Martin shot 79 to win by eight strokes.

In the junior competition, Owen Burzminski won with impressive scores of 73 and 76. Kelly Risling shot 74 and 71 to handily claim the senior men’s top spot, while Carol Wonko won the senior ladies title with scores of 91 and 93.
