Medicine Hat’s entry at the Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Federation championships started well but couldn’t pull out the finish they hoped for. In Calgary this past weekend, the Gas City entry in the men’s 35-over division beat the Clive Legends 6-1 Friday, but lost their last three games including a playoff matchup Sunday. The win featured solid pitching from Greg Elgie, Drew Jackiw and Trevor Rayner, plus a 2-for-2 day including a double from Grant Lefler. A 3-2 loss to the Calgary Pirates later Friday saw Elgie, the would-be tying run, thrown out at home plate. After that, a pair of losses to Red Deer wrapped up the weekend. They fell 13-6 Saturday, then 11-1 Sunday. No statistics from those games were available. Red Deer won the 35-plus final Monday, 10-9 over Calgary. A Hat team in the 43-over division won a Tier 2 division last year in Prince Edward Island, but they weren’t in Calgary to defend their title. 8
