Mavericks win rain-shortened game in Edmonton

By Medicine Hat News on July 25, 2019.

A scary moment, a couple laughable ones and an early finish were all part of the Medicine Hat Mavericks’ 8-2 win in Edmonton Wednesday.

Rain shortened the game to just six innings before being called official, a boon considering the Mavs had to drive all the way to Swift Current tonight for their next game.

Back-to-back four-run innings were enough for the visitors to improve to 23-21, while the host Prospects fell to 21-23. Two errors on Edmonton left-fielder Pierce Blohowiak were key in the fourth and fifth innings, the first a Tito Jones single that turned into an RBI triple when Blohowiak whiffed on the ball; the second a PJ Garcia single that Blohowiak mishandled to allow three runs to score.

Jaymon Cervantes went all five innings for Medicine Hat, striking out four and allowing four hits. Both Prospects runs came in the third inning.

The game also had a serious tone when Mavs’ Austin Sojka hit a comebacker that hit Prospects starting pitcher Jesse Poniewozik in the back of the head during the fourth-inning rally. Poniewozik left the field under his own power.

Collin Klingensmith went 3-for-3 with two runs for Medicine Hat, which returns home to Athletic Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday against Melville.
