Becky Martin eyes her putt on the eighth hole at Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club during the final round of the Victoria Day Classic Monday, May 20, 2019. Alberta champion Martin's time at nationals is done, missing the cut by three strokes on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.

Alberta champion Becky Martin began her Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship well Tuesday, but a rough back nine has her mid-way down the leaderboard.

The Medicine Hat golfer shot a 2-over par 74 at Red Deer Golf and Country Club, tied for 46th in the 155-player field. She was 2-under through five holes but four bogeys made for a tough finish in hot conditions.

Americans Zoe Campos and Andrea Lee each shot 6-under 66’s to take the Day 1 lead. Martin, MacKenzie Baustad and Stephanie Chelak combined to put Alberta third in the inter-provincial team competition, four shots back of Quebec’s 4-over.

While the team event ends with today’s second round, the main tournament goes 72 holes through to Friday. Martin has played at nationals before but certainly never as the Alberta champion, a feat she accomplished a mere two weeks ago.
