Majors all-stars in must-win mode

By Medicine Hat News on July 24, 2019.

It’s crunch time for the Medicine Hat all-stars at Alberta Little League baseball championships.

The 12-under majors division team lost 8-2 to Fish Creek Tuesday in Calgary, falling to 2-3 in the seven-team round robin with one game left.

They need to win it to crack the top-four and remain in the hunt for a trip to nationals.

“We’re in the mix, we’re still fighting but we’ve got to win tomorrow and we need a little help,” said head coach Brad Moch Tuesday night.

“It always comes down to the last day.”

Cade Moch had a solid start on the mound for Medicine Hat, letting up two runs in four innings and leaving with the score tied. But no Hat batter managed more than one hit on the afternoon, and Fish Creek scored once in the fifth, then five more in the sixth off reliever Parker McLaughlin. A grand slam highlighted the onslaught.

The Gas City side loaded the bases with one out in the second, then again with nobody out in the third but only managed one run each time.

“Today just got away from us a little bit at the end, we had a good game,” said coach Moch. “A couple missed plays, a couple timely hits from them was the difference.”

They face Cal West today, needing a win plus a Lethbridge win over Bow Ridge to crack the top four. Semifinals go Thursday with the final on Friday.

The winner heads to Ontario for nationals next week.
