Showcasing a club on the rise, the Medicine Hat Memorial Lawn Bowling Tournament was dominated by host teams even if they weren’t in the majority.

Despite nine of 14 squads coming from out of town, two sets of locals battled for the championship trophy Sunday.

The family team of Barb, Curt and their son Eric Moll got by Ina Lutz, Lori Lutz and Pat Dennis 10-2 for the Division 1 victory on home turf. The Moll’s became the first Hat team to win the trophy since the event began five years ago.

Curt Moll, the local club’s secretary, noted all five Hat teams were ranked into either the first or second division after a four-game preliminary round robin, an impressive showing by all. His side went 2-1-1 in the round robin and upset the top-seeded team from Edmonton’s Commonwealth club 6-3 to reach the final.

Another home team, with Wes Bresee, Jean Bresee and Jeff Desjarlais, won the Division 2 title. Edmonton’s Royal Lawn Bowling Club had teams win both the Division 3 (Merv Cleasby, Bob Griffith and Eng Gouw) and Division 4 (Marlen Shustov, Joe Van Alstine and France Jo) titles.
