Trio bring home medals from Tri-Prov meet

Three Medicine Hat track and field athletes had a weekend to remember in Regina.

Twins Tristan and Riley Friesen, plus Elic Ayomanor were among five Medicine Hat-area athletes at the Tri-Prov Western Canadian Championships which wrapped up Sunday.

The Friesen brothers combining for three medals. Riley won the under-16 boys shot put with a 13.30 metre throw. Tristan had a pair of silver medal results, a 41.99-metre javelin throw and a 41.95-metre discus hurl.

Ayomanor earned two relay podium finishes. He paired with Josh Bethel, Caiden Schultz and Shen Arnett to give Alberta a win in the under-18 4×100 metre boys relay. Alberta coach Sean Freeman, who also coaches Ayomanor in club track, told the News their time of 42.81 seconds has them ranked first in the country in their age group.

Ayomanor, going up against boys a year older than him, also ran a 4×400 relay team to a silver medal, and finished sixth in both the 100 and 200 metre sprints.

Riley Friesen was eighth in javelin and ninth in discus, while Tristan 10th in shot put.

Other Hat athletes at the Tri-Prov meet included Justina Renke (fourth in under-18 girls javelin, sixth in discus, seventh in shot put) and Novalee Pender (13th in under-18 girls triple jump, 18th in long jump).
