The Medicine Hat K of C Knights kicked off the First National Classic with a 16-4 victory over the Williston 15’s on Friday in Williston, N.D. While the Knights entered the fifth inning trailing 3-1, their offence exploded for 15 runs in the frame before sealing the mercy-rule victory in the home half of the inning. Carson Sauter went four solid innings, holding the 15’s to four runs on one hit and six walks before Cole Rath entered to shut the door in the fifth. Evan Morrison, Kobe Coderre, Jordan Hieb and Payton Eddy all finished the game with 2 RBI, while Morrison went 2-for-3 and Eddy was 2-for-2 with 2 runs and two walks. Morrison scored on a passed ball to put Medicine Hat on the board in the first, then brought in another on a bases-loaded bean-ball to kick off his team’s fifth-inning rally. The 15’s then walked the next eight batters before Morrison came back up and drove in another on a single to right. Hieb followed up two more walk-in runs with an RBI groundout, then Ben Van Der Sloot drove in Medicine Hat’s 15th run of the inning on an RBI error. The First National Classic continues Saturday and Sunday in Williston. 9
