Medicine Hat’s Thunder softball team went 3-3 at under-16 B provincials in Irma this past weekend, finishing just off the podium.
The Gas City crew had a great start to their weekend, beating Strathmore 17-13 thanks in part to a 4-for-4 game from Rachel Werre. They then beat Calgary’s Venom 8-3, getting a 3-for-4 effort from Kaitlyn Kreuger.
After an 8-4 loss to the host Tigers (Werre collecting another three hits), the Thunder wrapped up the round robin with a 10-6 win over Red Deer’s Rage. Mia Kelly threw a complete game, her team never falling behind and putting up five runs in the fifth inning to pull away.
Their 3-1 record earned a semifinal date with the top-ranked Elnora Eagles, who blasted their way to a four-inning mercy rule 15-0 win. A nine-run fourth by the Eagles ended their gold medal hopes, but a bronze medal date with Irma still loomed.
Alas, it wasn’t to be. Irma put together a six-run second and despite loading the bases in the second and fourth innings, Medicine Hat fell 9-0.
Up next for the local association is hosting under-10, under-12 and under-14 provincials this weekend.
