Martin leads after the first round

Becky Martin knows she can contend with the best golfers in the province, and after one round of the Alberta Amateur, now they know, too.

The Medicine Hat product posted a 2-over 73 Tuesday, tied with Calgary’s Kenna Hughes atop the leaderboard at The Ranch Golf and Country Club west of Edmonton.

Already planning on getting to nationals in Red Deer later this month, Martin wound guarantee a spot on the Alberta team at nationals with a top-three finish in the field of 41.

Martin birdied the par-5 13th hole to go with a trio of bogeys. She also leads the mid-amateur championship for women 25 years of age and older.

The event is only 54 holes, finishing on Thursday.
