Dylan MacPherson took the next step on his hockey career this past weekend.

The 21-year-old defenceman from Redcliff has signed a one-year contract with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League. The team announced the signing on Monday.

After finishing his last season of junior hockey with his hometown Medicine Hat Tigers, MacPherson got in a couple games with the T-Birds this spring, picking up a point in two games. Already noticed by the Florida Panthers – Springfield’s NHL affiliate – the steady blue-liner had two assists in the Panthers’ final development camp scrimmage June 30 in Coral Springs, Fla.

In 181 games with the Tigers, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound MacPherson had 43 points, a plus-15 rating and 36 penalty minutes.
