Mavericks’ five-game winning streak halted by 57s

By Medicine Hat News on July 6, 2019.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks had a five-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Swift Current 57s on Friday night at Mitchell Field.

Despite being held to just two hits on the night, Medicine Hat managed to seize control of the lead twice – but the 57s stole it back on a four-run rally in the sixth and held on for a 7-4 win.

The Mavericks sit at 14-17 with the loss, while Swift improved to 18-11.

Medicine Hat came out of the gates strong, scoring a run on a hit and a walk in the first, but the 57s answered back with a 2-RBI double from Tanner Holen in the home half of the frame, then Swift’s Ian McIntyre added another on an RBI single in the third.

The Mavericks jumped back out in from when Taylor Wright cashed a run on a single to centre then Nolan Rattai drove in two more thanks to a two-out error from shortstop Kiel Krumweide.

But again the 57s answered with even more in the bottom of the frame, plating three runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Alex Stinnett and Brayden Eckout then adding another on an RBI fielder’s choice from Jack Large.

Medicine Hat’s Derek Eubanks was left with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and two walks through 1 2/3 innings of relief work.

Swift reliever Garrett Hawkins earned the victory after entering with the bases loaded in the sixth and holding the Mavericks to just one walk over the next three innings.

Garrett Alexander picked up the save with a one-walk ninth.

Mavericks starter Owen Steele left after holding Swift Current to three runs on six hits and three walks while fanning two through the first four innings.

Medicine Hat chased 57s starter Brandon O’Neill with no out in the sixth, leaving him with a no decision after allowing four runs – two earned – on two hits and three walks.

PJ Garcia and Wright picked up Medicine Hat’s only hits on the night.

Both Holen and Eckout finished 2-for-5 with 2 RBI for Swift.

The Mavs are off for the weekend, though Rattai, outfielder Austin Sojka and pitcher Flynn Ridley will represent the club at the WCBL all-star game on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. in Edmonton.
