Track coach gets provincial award

It was a big weekend for Hat track athletes in Calgary, as well as one coach who got a provincial award.

Bulldogs Club coach Sean Freeman was one of two people named by Athletics Alberta as junior developmental coaches of the year Saturday. Freeman, who will coach Team Alberta at the Legion Nationals and Western Canadian Tri-Prov Championship this summer, has been coaching track for 14 years in the city.

Meanwhile, Freeman’s club as well as the Medicine Hat Panthers put several athletes on the podium at the Caltaf Track Classic.

Elic Ayomanor won the boys under-18 200 metre race in 22.27 seconds, plus was fourth in the 100. Fellow Bulldog Jayel Dovichak was second in the under-16 girls 80 metre hurdles, in addition to third-place finishes in the 300 metre sprint and long jump.

Kamryn Dovichak was third in under-14 girls hurdles, Madison Kane-Rissling was third in women’s under-20 high jump, while Novalee Pender’s bronze in under-18 girls triple jump rounded out the Bulldogs’ medal haul.

As for the Panthers, Joshua Suelzle continued his fantastic season with a win in men’s under-20 shot put, throwing it 13.69 metres. He added a third-place finish in discus and was fourth in javelin.

Zaynna Willoughby had quite the Saturday, second in under-14 girls hurdles, fourth in discus and fifth in high jump to take top spot in that day’s aggregate for her age group.

Tristan Friesen was third in under-16 boys javelin and fourth in discus. Abram Schwonik was second in ball throw for his under-10 division.
