Five Hat wrestlers qualify for Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current in August

By medicinehatnews on June 18, 2019.

Five Medicine Hat wrestlers have qualified to compete at the Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current.

Siblings Dylan, Aayden and Jaylaina Callan along with Kiana Ivey and Bailee McNaughton all won matches at Alberta’s team trials this past weekend in Wetaskiwin.

According to local Hawks coach Darren Klein, the mission on the weekend was simple: win and you’re in. And win they did.

“It shows that the level of wrestling has come up in our city and we are able to compete at all levels,” wrote Klein in an email to the News, noting the city has had two other wrestlers compete at these games in the past. “Making the team is also significant as it is a marker to the next Canada Games and makes international competition one step closer for these young Hatters!”

The Games take place in Swift Current Aug. 9-18, featuring 16 sports.
