Softball season is in full swing in the Medicine Hat area with rep teams picking up tournament wins, the high school season wrapping up and a lot more games to come this summer.

The Thunder under-14 team won their division at the Okotoks Fury Classic this past weekend, wrapping up gold with a 15-8 win over the Nosecreek Chaos.

A key hit from Jordan Weisgerber and stellar defence was reported to be the difference in the Thunder’s second win of the weekend over Chaos. They’d earned a 20-4 win in the round robin, in which Avery Weisgerber and Kayla Robinson had home runs.

A 12-1 win over the Lethbridge Heat in the round robin kept the Thunder rolling, led by Madi Perry’s 3-for-3 game at the plate and Ryan Harvey-Zenk’s triple. They also beat Okotoks Fury 19-11, and in Sunday’s semifinal earned a 12-6 win over Drumheller Pure Venom.

Medicine Hat is hosting under-14 D alongside under-12 and under-10 provincials July 12-14, so the Thunder are hoping the weekend was a sign of things to come.

High school

In Wednesday’s high school league final, it was McCoy defeating Hat High 6-4 for the local league championship.

At Redcliff, the Colts had the best regular season record, earning a bye into the championship matchup. Hat High beat Eagle Butte Monday in a semifinal.

Under-19

The local association’s oldest team has played in three tournaments already, including one this past weekend in Moose Jaw.

They lost 3-1 to Assiniboia, were blown out by Lumsden but earned a 13-4 win over Saskatoon.

Previously in Stettler June 1 and 2, they went 0-2-1 in the round robin before beating Foothills 9-6 for a third-place finish.

In Red Deer May 25-26, the Thunder lost 4-3 to High River and 8-1 to Red Deer’s Rage, but finished with a 14-4 win over Selects which included a Makayla Clarke home run.

Under-16

Playing in the Prairie League Softball for the second straight year, the under-16 Thunder opened their schedule with three wins and two losses in May.

A 15-1 win over Red Deer featured Mia Kelly’s complete game and Josie Clarke’s 3 RBI. After losing 6-2 to Elnora and 14-9 to Lloydminster, they beat Olds 19-9 and Edmonton River City 9-8.

Under-12

Two under-12 teams hosted Elkford and Lethbridge this past weekend for exhibition games. No scores were reported other than Medicine Hat’s development team beating Elkford. The rep team won three games in Brooks the weekend before and was second at a tournament in Leduc May 26.

Under-10

In Moose Jaw, the under-10 Thunder went 4-0 to take top spot.

Wins of 9-2 over Rouleau Ramblers, 10-2 over Moose Jaw Bash, 8-0 over Moose Jaw Edge and 3-1 over Regina Strikers made for an exciting weekend. One highlight was Bella Ferguson’s grand slam.
