Monarchs split long doubleheader with Royals

By Medicine Hat News on June 12, 2019.

Medicine Hat’s Moose Monarchs got a big shot in the arm Tuesday with an extra-inning win.

Drew Niwa drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning as the American Legion baseball team beat the Billings Royals 4-3 at Jeffries Field.

Heyden Harrison threw a complete game six-hitter for the Monarchs, who went on to lose the second half of the doubleheader 6-4. Harrison struck out six and walked four in the key start, only needing 103 pitches to get the win.

Royals pitchers walked in Medicine Hat’s first run of the night as well in the third inning. Tied 2-2 through the originally-scheduled seventh, Jaden Schwindt had an RBI single in the eighth, right on the heels of a Billings RBI triple in the top half of the frame, to force a second extra inning.

In the nightcap, a four-run Billings fourth inning proved to be the difference. Wyatt Bergen was tagged with the loss in relief of Schwindt, who had another RBI hit.

The teams play once more at Jeffries today starting at 2:30 p.m.
