Hat’s Valk gets to playoff round at match play

By Medicine Hat News on June 7, 2019.

Medicine Hat’s Michael Valk got to the playoffs at the Alberta Match Play Championship, which wrapped up Thursday at River Spirit Golf Club in Calgary.

Valk, coming off his second season at Wayland Baptist University in Texas, shot a 1-over 73 Tuesday to reach the top-16 in the 43-man field.

But he ran in to trouble in the form of Brendan MacDougall, who was 2-up with two holes to play in their round of 16 matchup Wednesday.

Valk won the final two holes to force a playoff, but the Calgary golfer pitched in from off the green to win the match on the first playoff hole.

MacDougall got all the way to the final where he lost to fellow Glencoe Golf and Country Club player Max Sekulic 2-and-1.
