You’ve only got until the end of the week if you plan on competing in the Southern Alberta Summer Games next month.

With registration deadlines firmly set for Friday, both Medicine Hat and Cypress County team coordinators are seeing an influx of people wanting to get out and participate in the Games’ 50th anniversary July 3-6 in Pincher Creek.

“I’ve learned through this job that Medicine Hat registers at the last minute,” said Amanda Andrew, Medicine Hat’s team lead. “Our numbers are higher than what we thought, so we’re excited.”

Andrew was surprised with the traffic at her Family Leisure Centre office, as there are already 130 committed athletes young and old signed up. That beats last year’s total of 110 or so.

However, there aren’t any pickleball players on the Hat team.

There are a few on Meaghan Morter’s Cypress County side, however, and with the sport now out of the Alberta 55-Plus Games going on in Medicine Hat the same weekend, both organizers had expected some late registrants.

“I can’t wait, it’s about a month away and it’s going to come fast,” said Morter, who’s only got about 40 participants on her team as of Wednesday.

Morter still hopes to see more equestrian entries, and both team leaders note there’s a full list of events, ranging from ball hockey to CrossFit, on the Games website (southernalbertasummergames.com).

Both the Hat and Cypress groups will have a baseball team this year, with beach volleyball, ball hockey and soccer also putting together squads.

Visit the Games website or drop by either team’s offices, with Andrew at the FLC and Morter at the county office in Dunmore. As long as you contact one of them before the end of the day Friday with an intent to register, they can get you in.
