Mavericks improve to 2-0

The Medicine Hat Mavericks climbed to 2-0 on the Western Canadian Baseball League season by sweeping a home-and-home set against the Brooks Bombers with a commanding 14-7 win on Friday at Elks Field.

Medicine Hat came out of the gates with first-inning solo shots from Nolan Rattai and Sal Rodriguez. While the Bombers answered back with three in the home half of the first to take an early lead, Rodriguez went yard again in the sixth to tie the game.

The Mavericks then tacked on 11 runs over the final three innings and held off a late push to secure the victory.

Rodriguez finished 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, while Rattai and Cameron Pope were both 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and John Velasco went 2-for-5.

Mavericks starter Owen Steele collected the victory after holding the Bombers to three runs on seven hits and no walks through six innings of work. Steele also struck out five.

Bombers reliever Dallas Forno took the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in the seventh.

The Mavericks take on the Bulls in Lethbridge on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
