Monarchs go 0-4 at Vauxhall tourney

By Medicine Hat News on May 21, 2019.

It was a rough first weekend for the Moose Monarchs baseball team.

The Medicine Hat American Legion side went 0-4 at a tournament in Vauxhall, outscored 50-7 in games against the host Jets and Lethbridge Elks.

After rain forced the cancellation of Friday games and led to both Great Falls and Calgary squads not making the trip at all, the tournament basically turned into a double round robin between the remaining squads.

Add in some key Monarchs not being available due to high school graduation events and it made for a long couple days for the Hat team.

Vauxhall went 4-0, beating Medicine Hat 12-2 Saturday and 11-2 Sunday.

Lethbridge went 2-2, with wins over the Monarchs of 17-3 Saturday and 10-0 Sunday.

Highlights were few and far between for the Monarchs. Reese Whelen had a 2-for-3, 2 RBI game in the 17-3 loss to the Elks. That was the only multi-hit game of the weekend for the team, which only had two hits in its other Saturday game and one in its second loss to Lethbridge Sunday.

The Monarchs’ next action is their home Servus Tournament, which starts May 31.
