Monarchs debut rained out in Vauxhall

By Medicine Hat News on May 18, 2019.

The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs were forced to wait for their season to kick off after inclement weather resulted in the cancellation of their opening game at the Vauxhall Academy Jets’ 13th annual invitational tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Monarchs – who are still finalizing their official roster ahead of the team’s American Legion AA season opener against the Lethbridge Elks on June 4 at Athletic Park — were slated to take on the Calgary Jr. Dinos in their first game of the tournament before rain prevented them from taking the field.

Monarchs head coach Skyler Stromsmoe said a slight alteration to the schedule will put the local squad back on the diamond for a pair of consecutive games on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.

While the Monarchs are scheduled to meet up with host Vauxhall and the Great Falls Chargers Saturday, Stromsmoe added the matchups may fluctuate due to the weather as well, in order to accommodate a potential make-up game with the Jr. Dinos.

If all goes according to plan, the Monarchs will round out the round robin Sunday at 10 a.m. against the Lethbridge Elks.

The top two squads at the wood bat tournament will then advance to the championship game on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Monarchs won’t hit the diamond in Medicine Hat until May 31, when they host the 31st annual Servus Credit Union AA American Legion Baseball Tournament at Jeffries Park, McCoy Field and Athletic Park.

The non-conference tournament will feature two divisions of four teams from across Alberta and Saskatchewan and runs through June 2.
