Midget Devils buoyed by addition of Broesky

By Medicine Hat News on May 14, 2019.

Busy with hockey for much of the spring, Tyler Broesky wasted no time making an impact in another sport this past weekend.

The Hat product – recently the city’s only representative at the Alberta Cup all-star hockey tournament – was just one more cog in the already successful midget Sun Devils lacrosse team, scoring in three of four tournament games in Cranbrook as the team won gold.

Medicine Hat beat Beaumont 7-3 in Sunday’s title game, getting two goals from Bryson Helmle plus singles from Broesky, Quinn Canadine, Zarchary McBride, Cameron Jackle and Alex McMorran.

They also beat the host team 9-2, West Kootenay 20-2 and Beaumont 6-5 in the round robin. It was no surprise that they faced the Edmonton-area squad again for gold.

Ty Moore led the Sun Devils with six goals in total, including four of them (plus three assists) in the blowout of West Kootenay. Josh Drefs also had his first goal of the season.

Bantam

Both Devils bantam teams were in Brooks Saturday for doubleheaders against the host Drillers and Lethbridge.

The Bantam 2 team lost 5-3 to Lethbridge but beat Brooks 9-1. Houston Eakins, Brennn Wereley and Carson Christianson each had two goals in the win, while Jayden Richards’ pair led them in the loss.

Bantam 1 started with a 9-6 win over Brooks in which Jack Henry had three goals, plus two from Torin Thickson and Madden Kelly. But they lost 7-6 to Lethbridge, despite getting a hat trick from Thickson and two more from Kelly.

Peewee

At Brooks, the peewee Sun Devils beat Lethbridge 7-3, then Brooks 6-0 in an impressive showing.

Jaxon Buscholl got his first shutout in the win over Brooks, helped by three goals from Koen Armbruster and two from Levi Dreger.

Ryder Farrell and Nathan Stehr had two apiece in the win over Lethbridge.

Novice

Doubleheaders are one thing, but the Novice 2 Sun Devils took it a step further Saturday. They played a tripleheader, and won all three.

After a 9-4 win over Brooks Orange, they squared off with Crowsnest twice. Scores in those games were 16-3 and 12-3.

The Novice 1’s beat Crowsnest 9-2.

Tykes

It was a great weekend for the Devils’ tykes, who beat Lethbridge 11-1 and Brooks Drillers White 5-3.
