Crescent Heights High School starter Layton Neigum tosses a strike Friday, April 5, 2019 during the Vikings' game against the McCoy Colts.

It might have been the first tournament of the season, but there’s no time like the present for Hat High’s baseball team.

The Mohawks went 3-0 to claim top spot in the FAQ Technology Solutions Icebreaker Tournament, with the key decision being a 9-8 win over Monsignor McCoy Saturday afternoon.

At Jefferies Park, the Colts stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and final inning, Tory Nelson striking out Ty Olinski.

Nelson went the distance but it was the offences dictating play, with only one half-inning failing to produce a run. It was McCoy’s first at-bats of the game, which wound up being the difference. Wyatt Study took the pitching loss, goign 1 2/3 innings

Kirby Coderre went 2-for-2 for Hat High. Ben van der Sloot was 2-for-3 for McCoy.

In other Saturday games the Mohawks beat Crescent Heights 15-2 and McCoy beat Eagle Butte 8-0. Hayden Hall and Austin Moch combined on a three-hitter for the Mohawks in their win, while Cole Rath had the four-hit shutout in McCoy’s game.
