High school baseball season got underway Friday, but the scores were far less important to just getting out there and playing.

The Icebreaker Tournament, as it’s been dubbed, opened with all four local teams plus Brooks playing a purely round-robin event. Hat High coach Lyall Foran said modified rules such as five-inning games, plus run limits to keep pitch counts down are in place to keep things moving and ensure everyone “gets a lot of baseball in.”

The Mohawks beat Eagle Butte 7-0 in their lone game of the day at Jefferies Park, with pitchers Kobe Coderre and Josh Stark combining on a three-hitter. Felix Miller and Tory Nelson each went 2-for-2 offensively.

Eagle Butte dropped a narrow 6-4 decision to Brooks to open the day, then played its third game of the afternoon, beating Crescent Heights 8-7.

Crescent Heights and Brooks also played three times. The Vikings lost 9-4 to McCoy and 16-6 to Brooks. The Buffaloes also lost 7-1 to McCoy.

Games continue Saturday at both Jefferies and McCoy diamonds.
