Medicine Hat’s youngest wrestlers finished their season with a hometown meet Friday, while a pair of older ones came home with hardware at junior nationals in Saskatoon this past weekend. Elementary City Championships were held Friday at Hat High, with nearly 100 competitors out on the mats. Twenty gold medals were handed out, and Hawks club coach Darren Klein noted in a press release that club athletes didn’t necessarily win all of them. “This is what is truly exciting about the sport,” he wrote. “You can find kids that are total naturals!” Meanwhile in Saskatoon at Wrestling Canada’s junior and senior championships, Kayen Ivey won the Greco Roman 77 kilogram junior division unopposed, though he went 0 (2 in the 79 kg junior wrestling division. Cassie Fischer won her first match at nationals, then lost her last two to wind up third in the junior 82 kg ranks. Klein noted that Fischer was competing for the first time after returning from an injury.
