Hatter Lauren Boychuk has had quite a deal of success reining cow horses down in the U.S.

She recently returned from a 10-day international competition in Phoenix for Sun Circuit, the world’s largest horse show.

“I did really, really well,” said Boychuk. “I won a saddle and a buckle and custom-made spurs and money.”

She’s been competing in Phoenix, where her horses reside, for seven years, winning two world championships and one reserve world championship, as well as achieving High Point Horse and Rider of the Year for the American Quarter Horse Association in two consecutive years.

Boychuk, 60, has been riding horses since as early as she can recall.

“I grew up on a ranch and my dad had me on a horse (and) I was riding by myself by the time I was three years old,” she recalls.

“I had my own horses and I rode everyday for about three hours until I went to university and didn’t have any money and had to sell them.”

Her daughters began riding, one of whom rode in the States.

“When my youngest daughter was done school, I decided it was time for me to do it, so I bought my first horse and trained with the trainer that my oldest daughter trained with,” said Boychuk. “I just thought it was a really fun thing to do.”

She rides down south for a few reasons – her trainer, “the calibre of shows down there” and the amount of them due to the weather.

“We travel all over the place down there,” Boychuk said. “We’re kind of starting to slow down a little bit and just go to big shows.”

The next show she plans on competing in is in Las Vegas starting April 1.
