Winnipeg Ice win draft lottery

The Winnipeg Ice got their first victory since closing the book on their time in Cranbrook by winning the Western Hockey League’s draft lottery on Wednesday morning.

The Ice — who finished their final season in Cranbrook and will start next year at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg – earned the right to pick first at the upcoming WHL bantam draft after finishing the season at 13-45-7-3.

The Medicine Hat Tigers hold the 12th overall pick in the draft.

The Prince George Cougars will pick second, followed by the Saskatoon Blades – who will make their selection in place of the Regina Pats – while the Kelowna Rockets earned the fifth pick and the Brandon Wheat Kings settled for sixth.

The bantam draft will take place on Thursday, May 2 in Red Deer.
