Two local basketball squads reach South Zone finals

By Medicine Hat News on March 9, 2019.

Two area teams are through to finals while at least three others were on the losing end at South Zone basketball tournaments Friday.

Monsignor McCoy’s girls and boys each beat fellow Medicine Hat team Crescent Heights in Barnwell at the 3A South Zone event.

The girls won 76-52, getting 13 points from Jaden Brown and 12 from Taytem Rath in a rematch of last week’s local league final. This one arguably meant more given that the winner got one of the zone’s two automatic berths to provincials next week in Athabasca.

Julia Forsyth and Mackenzie Richardson each had nine points for the Vikings, whose season is over.

McCoy is expected to meet top seed and zone host Taber Saturday for the zone banner.

On the boys side, the Colts earned a 71-41 win over the Vikings. Chayce Davies and Ethan Smith had 17 points apiece for McCoy, which unlike the girls draw does not have a spot at provincials unless it can win Saturday’s zone final. WR Myers was playing Eagle Butte in the other semifinal Friday.

Meanwhile in Lethbridge, Hat High’s teams were in their most important games of the season at 4A zones. Win their B finals and they were in to provincials, lose and their seasons were over.

Hat High’s girls lost 68-58 to Cardston. No details were initially available.

Hat High’s boys were playing Magrath in a late game at the University of Lethbridge.
