Peewee Hounds dealt difficult loss in Vauxhall

By Medicine Hat News on March 9, 2019.

It was a stunning defeat for Medicine Hat’s peewee AA Hounds at the South Central Alberta Hockey League’s South Division tournament Friday.

After losing just three times all season, the Hounds fell 7-6 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red in Vauxhall. But they still have a chance to move forward to the league final series and provincials, as the top four teams from the round robin get to Sunday’s medal round.

The Hounds held one-goal leads into each of the intermissions, leading into a wild third frame. Alex Westlund’s second and third goals of the day put Lethbridge ahead, then Samuel Hynes and Deegan Kinniburgh responded to give Medicine Hat another lead.

But Carter Cunningham scored a power play goal with 1:34 left, then the game-winner with 17 seconds on the clock for the Hurricanes, who outshot the Hounds 41-28.

Earlier in the day Medicine Hat beat Cranbrook 5-2, getting two goals and two assists from Ryan Miller plus single goals from Noah Derouin, Josh Evaschesen and Josiah Jackson.

Midget 15’s

Provincials will not be in the cards for the South East Athletic Club’s midget 15-year-old team, which lost its second game in a row at the Sutter Cup in Cochrane and won’t be getting to the medal round Saturday.

The Tigers were playing their final game late Friday against the Calgary Stamps, though no score was available by press time.

Against the Red Deer North Star Chiefs early Friday, SEAC fell 3-2. Ethan Machan’s goal in the first minute of the third period tied the game 2-2 but Tristan Baumung responded less than a minute later with what wound up as the game-winning goal.

Callen Prosofsky had the other goal for SEAC, while Brendan Olson made 23 saves in net.

Midget AA

At Okotoks, the midget AA Hounds opened their SCAHL playoffs with an 8-2 win over Foothills Thursday night.

Eight different players scored for the Hounds, though Carson Dingwall added a pair of assists to make him the top point-getter on the night. Nate Hoffman made 11 saves and had his shutout bid stopped in the third.

Medicine Hat played Lethbridge Friday though no score was available by press time.
