Minor hockey: Peewee team wins playoff opener

By Medicine Hat News on March 8, 2019.

NEWS FILE PHOTO Minor hockey season is wrapping up in Medicine Hat with some teams in playoff action.

After losing the last two games of their near-perfect regular season, there might have been some question as to which Medicine Hat team would show up at South Central Alberta Hockey League playoffs in Taber this weekend.

Through one game, it seems as though the side that went unbeaten for a few months is back.

The Hounds beat Chestermere 16-2 Thursday to kick off their South Division tournament, outshooting the Lakers 57-19.

Noah Derouin had five goals to lead the way, while Josh Evaschesen (three goals, two assists) and Deegan Kinniburgh (five assists) also had five-point nights.

Deegan Bert and Ryan Miller each had two goals. Other scorers were Samuel Hynes, Wyatt Dreger, Jesse Klimosko and Josiah Jackson.

Kaige Schafer got the win in net for Medicine Hat, which next plays Cranbrook today at the Vauxhall Recreation Centre. They also have to face Lethbridge and Foothills, then hope to be in Sunday’s final. The winner advances to a league final series against the winner of the North Division tournament.

The Hounds went 29-3-2 in the regular season, while Chestermere was 0-34.

Midget 15’s

At Cochrane, the South East Athletic Club Tigers were shut out in their Sutter Cup opener Thursday.

The midget 15-year-old team fell 3-0 to the Okotoks Oilers, outshot 42-25. Ethan Macintyre had two goals for the Oilers while Easton Inglis had the other. Dylan Abel-Fries recorded the shutout.

Aidan Low made 39 saves for the Tigers, who earned the right to be in the championship pool by finishing fifth in the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League’s South Division.

If they want to get to the medal round they’ll likely have to win both games today, starting with an 8 a.m. clash with Red Deer. They wind up a four-team round robin pool against the Calgary Stamps later in the day.

Midget AA

The midget AA Hounds are in Calgary for their SCAHL tournament this weekend, and played Foothills Thursday. No result was available by press time.
