Swimmers medal in Calgary

By Medicine Hat News on March 5, 2019.

Medicine Hat swimmers combined to win 10 medals at the provincial short course swim championships in Calgary this weekend.

Between the Medicine Hat Waves and Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club, there were plenty of top times but only a few who managed to step on the podium.

Quirina Thompson did it four times.

Thompson, 16, won the 100 metre butterfly in 1:07.40, was second in both the 200 and 400 freestyle and earned a bronze in the 200 individual medley. The AMAC swimmer made two more finals as well.

She wasn’t the only gold medal winner from her club. Trinity Shilka, 15, won the 200 medley in 2:31.93, plus took third place in the 100 butterfly.

Rounding out Marlins medallists, Brandt Swaren won silver in the 200 metre freestyle. Nine other AMAC athletes competed as well.

The Waves sent four swimmers to the 25-metre (short course) meet, with three of them making finals and one getting a couple medals.

Karsten Senft, 13, was second in his 100 metre freestyle and third in the 100 medley.

The season now switches focus to the spring championships set for later this month in Edmonton.
