Mortlock, Alberta in gold medal game

By Medicine Hat News on March 2, 2019.

Alberta, including Medicine Hat's Jordan Mortlock (8), celebrates its overtime semifinal win against British Columbia at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer Friday.

Medicine Hat athletes will wind up combining for four medals at the Canada Winter Games; a total not seen in decades, if ever.

The last of those medals’ colour isn’t yet known, however.

At Red Deer, Jordan Mortlock and Alberta’s female hockey team made it to Saturday’s final with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against British Columbia Friday. They’ll play either Ontario or Quebec for gold.

Sarah Wozniewicz was the overtime hero for Alberta, netting the winner with 3:48 left in the extra frame.

Mortlock assisted on Kassy Betinol’s goal early in the third period, which broke a scoreless deadlock. But B.C.’s Jenna Buglioni replied a few minutes later in the tense semifinal matchup.

B.C. had beat Alberta 6-1 in both teams’ opening game last Sunday. Alberta beat Nova Scotia 4-3 in a shootout Monday, then lost 2-1 to Ontario Tuesday. Mortlock had an assist in each of the first two games.

A 3-0 quarter-final shutout of Manitoba Thursday got Alberta into Friday’s rematch with B.C.

Hat boxer Janick Lacroix won silver in the Games’ first week, while long track speedskater Josh Hathaway won gold in team pursuit and bronze in the 5,000 metre.

Three Hat hockey players came home with medals at the 2011 Games but the city hasn’t had four or more medallists at the quadrennial event since at least 1999.
