Pair of local club’s athletes take top spot at indoor track provincials

By Medicine Hat News on February 21, 2019.

Two local track club members won provincial indoor title this past weekend.

At the Alberta Indoor Games in Edmonton, Renae Ryan and Maxwell Archibald of the Bulldogs club garnered first-place finishes, though in each case their competition literally didn’t show up.

Ryan, in the women’s under-20 pentathlon, wound up the lone competitor when Calgary’s Lisa Cozma – who was signed up – was a scratch.

It’s not as though Ryan took it easy, running the 60 metre hurdles in 11.98 seconds, recording a high jump of 1.35 metres, a long jump of 4.42 metres and a shot put throw of 7.07 metres. She then ran the 800 metres in 2:50.49 for a grand total of 2,054 points.

The situation was similar for Maxwell Archibald in the under-20 men’s long jump. Archibald, from Raymond, was up against Medicine Hat’s Jayden Smith but Smith didn’t wind up competing. Archibald jumped 5.13 metres for gold.

Other Bulldogs at provincials were Madison Kane-Rissling and Faith Scrivener. Kane-Rissling was second in women’s under-20 high jump (1.50 metres) and third in triple jump (9.73 metres) as her best finishes. Scrivener came closest to the podium in under-18 girls shot put with a 7.64-metre heave.
