Cubs open second round Tuesday

The Medicine Hat Cubs will be no stranger to the road by the time their second round Heritage Junior Hockey League playoff series with the Coaldale Copperheads is said and done. The Cubs released the series schedule Saturday, with the back-and-forth battle starting Tuesday in Coaldale at 8 p.m. The series shifts to the Kinplex for an early Game 2 on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by Game 3 on Saturday in Coaldale at 8 p.m. Medicine Hat will host Game 4 on Monday at 7:30 p.m. and Game 6, if necessary, Feb. 28 at 8:30 p.m. Coaldale will host Game 5 on Feb. 27 at 7:45 p.m. and Game 7 March 2 at 8 p.m., if necessary. Coaldale finished atop the Southern Division standings with a 29-7-2 record. While the Cubs landed fifth in the Southern at 17-17-4, they swept the Strathmore Wheatland Kings in the first-round to earn a date with Coaldale. The winner of the series will take on either the Cochrane Generals or the Okotoks Bisons. Up in the Northern Division, the Blackfalds Wranglers swept the Stettler Lightning and will face the Airdrie Techmation Thunder in the second round, while the Mountainview Colts swept the Ponoka Stampeders and will take on the Red Deer Vipers. 9-8
