Cheerleading teams from far and wide showed their skills at the Cypress Centre Saturday, with two local clubs garnering plenty of accolades.

Both the Stingerz and Ultimate Cheer Fusion had winning teams at the Swarm the Hat event, the first competition for cheerleading groups in southern Alberta this year.

The top overall score went to Strathmore’s Matrix Platinum Elite, a 91.42 mark that just edged out the host Stingerz Honey Beez (91.10). Moose Jaw’s Poison came in third with 91 points.

The Honey Beez might not have taken first overall but they did win their junior division, notably getting zero deductions for their routine.

Another team that got zero deductions was Ultimate Cheer Fusion’s Glow squad. The five-to-eight-year-old group won their division with the impressive showing.

Stingerz’s Killer Beez got the fourth-best score of the weekend in winning their open division, an 89.92. And the Orchid Beez won their special abilities group.

With seven clubs represented and both team and individual competitions, there were lots of ribbons to hand out, but also plenty of room to improve the rest of the season.

Fusion’s other results included a second place and two third-place individual routines. Their recreational Satellites team (ages 6-11) won its division, while Blast (8-11) was second in senior Level 3.

Stingerz had a first-place and three second-place individual results, a first and two seconds in duos, then three more second-place finishes in team competition. The senior Level 2 Queen Beez, mini prep Auzzie Beez and tiny novice Royal Beez were all second-place finishers, while the youth Level 1 Bumble Beez wound up fifth.

Both Hat clubs are off to Lethbridge later this month for their next competitions.
