Two more signees for Mohawks

Football season has come and gone, but the good times still haven’t stopped for the Hat High Mohawks.

Two more members of the Rangeland Football Conference championship roster signed offers to further their game at a post-secondary level this week, with Josh Howe joining the ranks of the Regina Rams and Zach Campbell committing to the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

“It’s really exciting,” said Mohawks head coach Quinn Skelton. “There’s a lot of pride in watching these guys move on and have the opportunity to play at the next level and get an education out of the game.”

Howe will be joining the Rams alongside Hat High teammate Justin Maser — who signed his own scholarship to compete at the University of Regina earlier this month. Skelton says Howe has a lot to offer the Rams after demonstrating his abilities in all areas of the game with the Mohawks.

“He’s just a big, strong all-around athlete. He played defensive end and outside linebacker for us, he played slotback and tight end, and he’s also a very good punter,” said Skelton. “I think he’s just got such a tremendous upside and the university can probably mould him and use him whichever way they see fit.”

Skelton says he anticipates Campbell will fit perfectly into the University of Alberta’s framework as a strong receiver with no shortage of potential.

“He’s a 200-pound track-type athlete,” said Skelton. “He’ll be able to fit in and play a real role with their receiving core. Just a good quality kid with a good head on his shoulders, and a super hard worker.”

Skelton added Howe, Campbell and Maser likely won’t be the only graduating members of the Mohawks to continue playing the gridiron game next season, as a handful of other Grade 12 players are on the cusp of committing to either post-secondary institutions or Canadian Junior Football League programs in the coming weeks.

“As a group we knew we had a pretty special bunch when they were coming in to us out of Grade 9. They haven’t disappointed whatsoever,” said Skelton. “In addition to the boys who have signed right now we’ve got two or three others who are looking at signing right away and we’ve got another four or five who will probably end up with junior teams somewhere in Western Canada. As a graduating class it’s spectacular. We probably haven’t had such a great group of kids since our 2001 class.”
